When I officially launched Scrappyland on January 21, 2005, I don\u2019t recall having a master plan. All I knew was that\u2014as one of my first posts argued\u2014Scrappy mattered<\/a>. Very little had been written about him at the time. I\u2019d already realized that there was plenty of fodder, such as the unexpectedly vast quantities of merchandise<\/a> he inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot has changed in the subsequent 20 years. Scrappy cartoons, once nearly impossible to see, are in bountiful supply on YouTube<\/a>. It\u2019s no longer a shocking development when people who aren\u2019t me write about them<\/a>. There was even a new fan-made Scrappy cartoon<\/a> a few years ago, a fact that does<\/em> still boggle my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, when I first started calling Scrappy \u201cAmerica\u2019s favorite forgotten cartoon star\u201d\u2014a line I stole from Friend of Scrappy Jerry Beck\u2014I was joking. Now you can make a decent case that\u2019s just plain fact. If this site has played a role in this Great Scrappy Resurgence, I\u2019m happy to claim my share of the credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, writing for Scrappyland is a refuge. It\u2019s fun to spend time in a tiny world with Scrappy at its center, where problems don\u2019t get much more severe than the fact that Petey Parrot<\/a> is, as Paul Etcheverry and Will Friedwald\u2019s filmography<\/a> rightly pointed out, \u201carguably the most obnoxious cartoon character of all time.\u201d I may not post incessantly, but I always have stuff in the works, and I can\u2019t imagine losing interest in keeping it going. Recently, I\u2019ve invested a considerable amount of time<\/a> to renovating the technical underpinnings that will make that possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun thought: The earliest Scrappy cartoons go into the public domain in two years. Back in 2005, that eventuality was so far off it hadn\u2019t even occurred to me to contemplate it.
